Pima County Parks & Recreation Wins Award for Aquatics Program

Pima County Parks & Recreation has won the 2024 Outstanding Program for Aquatics Award from the Arizona Parks & Recreation Association.

The award was presented on the first night of the annual APRA Conference & Expo in Tucson Aug. 26.

The award recognized the county’s swim team program for criteria such as innovation, responding to a community need, and general excellence.

“Parks & Recreation is honored to receive this award,” said Grant Bourguet, recreation superintendent at Parks & Recreation. “We are already hard at work making this amazing program even better for next summer.”

Nine teams participate in the annual summer program, one for each of Pima County’s pools. The teams participate in weekly practices, five swim meets and a daylong championship at the end of the season.

“This one-of-a-kind program enables all participants, regardless of swimming ability, to have an opportunity to compete in a safe environment that encourages personal growth and development while also having fun,” Bourguet said.

The program is open to youth ages 5 to 18, and typically draws more than 800 participants every summer. It first launched in 1992.
