Northwest Medical Center, Tucson Hospitals Ranked by U.S. News & World Report

U.S. News & World Report has released its annual Best Hospitals rankings, and Northwest Medical Center was ranked the best hospital in Tucson, with Banner-University Medical Center, Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital and TMC Healthcare sharing the No. 2 spot.

In addition to the regional rankings, Northwest was “high performing” in procedures for colon cancer surgery, heart failure, hip and knee replacement and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder; Banner was “high performing” in colon cancer surgery, lung cancer surgery and procedures for heart failure; Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital earned the designation for colon cancer surgery, hip and knee replacement and COPD procedures. TMC earned the designation for procedures for heart failure, hip and knee replacement and COPD.

For the 2020-21 rankings, a hospital qualified for consideration in specialties if it satisfied any of the following four criteria: it’s a teaching hospital, it’s affiliated with a medical school, it has at least 200 beds set up and staffed, or it has at least 100 beds and offers at least four out of eight advanced technologies associated with high-quality care. 

To be nationally ranked in a specialty, a hospital must excel in caring for the sickest, most medically-complex patients. 

The data used in U.S. News’ 2020-21 Best Hospitals list was collected before the COVID-19 pandemic, with the pandemic’s impact on hospitals not being reflected in the ratings or rankings.
