El Rio Health Earns Repeat AMA Recognition for Advancing Physician Well-Being
El Rio Health has earned Gold-level recognition for the second consecutive cycle from the American Medical Association through its Joy in Medicine® Health System Recognition Program.
El Rio remains the only Federally Qualified Health Center in the nation to achieve Gold-level status and is one of just 21 health care organizations nationwide to receive the program’s highest designation for 2026-2027.
The prestigious recognition honors health systems, hospitals and medical groups that demonstrate a commitment to reducing physician burnout and improving professional fulfillment through evidence-based strategies and organizational support. Organizations that meet the rigorous criteria of the Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program are recognized as leaders in addressing the systemic factors that contribute to burnout and advancing a culture of well-being across care teams.
“Being recognized once again at the Gold level reflects El Rio Health’s commitment to creating an environment where physicians can thrive personally and professionally while delivering exceptional care to our patients,” said Clinton Kuntz, DBH, El Rio Health president and CEO. “Investing in clinician well-being is essential to ensuring a resilient workforce and healthier communities.”
Although physician burnout rates have declined in recent years, physicians continue to face a higher risk of burnout than other U.S. workers. Administrative burdens, workforce shortages and ongoing stigma surrounding mental health remain significant challenges across the profession.
“Supporting physician well-being helps create better care for everyone,” said Dr. Willie Underwood III, MSc, MPH, president of the American Medical Association. “Studies show that when physicians are supported, patients benefit from safer care, higher quality, and a better overall experience. Organizations recognized by the Joy in Medicine Program are leading the way by investing in workplaces that support physicians and help them deliver compassionate, high-quality care. The AMA is proud to honor these leaders for their commitment to physician well-being and healthier communities.”
Since its launch in 2019, the Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program has recognized 194 organizations across 41 states and the District of Columbia for their efforts to improve physician well-being and reduce burnout. This year, 92 health care organizations earned recognition, including 39 first-time recipients. Recognition is awarded for a two-year period and evaluates organizations across key domains including leadership, commitment, assessment, teamwork, support and practice efficiency.
As the only Federally Qualified Health Center in the nation to earn Gold-level recognition, El Rio Health continues to serve as a national leader in fostering a workplace culture that supports physician well-being, professional fulfillment and the delivery of high-quality patient care.
